Duties and Responsibilities
Summary of the job
The Database Administrator is responsible for the administration, maintenance, security, and optimization of programme databases and digital information systems, ensuring the availability of high-quality, secure, and reliable data to support programme implementation, monitoring, research, reporting, and decision-making. Manage project databases, electronic data capture systems, patient navigation platforms, and related information systems, ensuring data integrity, accessibility, interoperability, security, and compliance with established data governance standards. The role supports routine data management, reporting, analytics, system enhancements, user support, and the effective functioning of digital health and research information systems across all programme sites.
Key Responsibilities
Administration, maintenance, optimization, and security of programme databases, REDCap platforms, patient navigation systems, and electronic health information systems, Database design, data architecture, integration, and interoperability with DHIS2, cancer registries, laboratory information systems, and other digital health platforms, Data quality management, validation, cleaning, verification, auditing, and implementation of data integrity controls, Development and maintenance of data dictionaries, metadata repositories, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and database documentation, Generation of routine datasets, dashboards, automated reports, and data extracts to support programme monitoring, research, and decision-making, Implementation of data security, backup, recovery, confidentiality, access control, and disaster recovery mechanisms in compliance with data protection and research ethics requirements,
Proficiency in database management systems (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, REDCap), data visualization platforms, and statistical software such as R, Stata, SAS, SPSS, or Python, Technical support, troubleshooting, user training, and capacity strengthening for programme staff, researchers, healthcare workers, and implementing partners on database and information management systems.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in statistics, computer science, public health, epidemiology, or a related field. A master’s degree is often preferred. Proficiency in database management systems (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, REDCap), data visualization platforms, and statistical software such as R, Stata, SAS, SPSS, or Python; Technical support, troubleshooting, user training, and capacity strengthening for programme staff, researchers, healthcare workers, and implementing partners on database and information management systems. Understanding of clinical trials, cancer registries, and biomedical data standards. Strong skills in Microsoft Excel, Access, and data visualization tools. Accuracy in data entry, cleaning, and validation, Ability to interpret complex datasets and generate meaningful insights, Clear reporting to researchers, clinicians, and stakeholders, Collaborative approach with multidisciplinary teams (oncologists, statisticians, project principal investigators, Strong commitment to data protection and ethical handling of patient information, Ability to troubleshoot data inconsistencies and propose solutions, Flexibility to work with evolving datasets and project requirements.
