Role Overview
Contribute to the development of chemicals management policies and strategies in line with the Ministry’s strategic plan, mandate and national development imperatives; Promote education, training and awareness as well as communication and advocacy on sustainable chemical management and its impact on the environment; Superintend over the conduct of risk assessments and mitigation measures to ensure a chemical-hazardous free environment; Develop plans for the segregation, treatment and disposal of hazardous waste in accordance with environmental laws and regulations; Collaborate with other government agencies, international organizations, and civil society groups to align policies, share best practices in chemical management initiatives and integration of green-chemistry principles; Coordinate research on chemicals management in line with regional and international best practices and make recommendations where necessary; Oversee the preparation of periodic environmental performance reports including chemical usage, emissions and waste metrics; Supervise, coach and counsel subordinates.
Requirements & Qualifications
• A degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management or any other related field
• A relevant Masters degree is an added advantage
• At least six (6) years relevant experience in the Environmental Officer grade or equivalent
• An understanding of the regulations and policies, Regional and International protocols and Conventions on Environment Management issues
• Experience in programme and project development, integrated planning and analysis, implementation, and management
• Knowledge of local, national and international chemical regulations such as (OSHA, REACH)
• An understanding of chemical technology, toxicology and emerging safer-chemistry technologies
• Strategic leadership skills
• Ability to communicate and network at all levels
• Data management and reporting skills.
